Newsletter Autumn 2020

2020 has been a challenging time to run a small business and we couldn’t have done it without you our lovely loyal customers, you have kept me busy packing up orders till the small hours some nights, so I would like to send you huge thank you to those who have supported The Threshing Barn these last 6 months. Our mail order business has exploded, so much so that I have given myself the new title of: “Packing Queen”.

I thank you all for your patience in having to wait longer for your packages to arrive due to the extended postal and courier delivery times. A big thank you also goes out to the staff at our small local Post Office, our postie’s and our very hard-working courier delivery guys. You have all earned your pressie’s this Christmas.

Sara has been beavering away at the computer working on the website, updating stock levels and extending the range available for you to buy online; challenging when I (up to my neck in brown paper) forget to tell her what’s arrived and what’s been sold over the phone!!!! You’ll see on the website that products have been put into more logical categories, product photos have been updated and improvements are being made daily.  So do go and take a look……

I have really enjoyed chatting to you all over the phone and I have heard some wonderful stories from amazing people. Customers who were retired and volunteered to go back to help the NHS as nurses; Teachers ordering craft supplies and equipment for pupils whose parents were key workers are just a couple of examples.

Another big thank you goes to all the show organisers that put on Virtual events that we have participated in. I know you have loved the antics that Sara and I got up to, and if you have missed them then visit our website or Facebook and have a catch up over a brew.

We had so many messages to say how we had given you a good chuckle, well we had quite a chuckle making the videos! We are glad we have been able to brighten these dark times up, we all needed a bit of light entertainment when we were on our own and so frightened and worried about friends and family.

I had a great time last week when my Son and his family came to visit, I loved having my granddaughters here for a holiday. They were so excited to sit in the front of the van and drive over the mountain especially through the clouds to the workshop. “Can we go and make things Grannie “they asked every day. I got them weaving on The Ashford SampleIt Rigid Heddle loom and a new generation of weavers was born, they were hooked. The Threshing Barn also stocks a great selection of items suitable for children; pom- pom makers and kits, finger weaving sticks, French knitting bobbins, cardboard weaving kits and small Louet Lisa weaving frames to name a few.

New stock of silks has arrived perfect for making papers, collage, bowls, trapping into felt and for spinning. We have natural and hand dyed options. If you are wondering how then visit our Facebook to watch our silk demo. With all orders for silk over £30 we will send you a bag of natural silk noils and a set of silk notes on the history, production, silk fabric names and instructions on how to make paper.

If you are in the market for a 60cm 8 shaft Ashford Table loom I have a built one which is available for collection only, as the customer went for a 80cm loom instead. It would save you about 3 hours’ time (and a bit of swearing!) not having to build the loom yourself.

This year has seen a drastic reduction in what the local farmers receive for their fleeces. So please think of buying local wools. The carbon footprint of buying imported yarns that are treated with chemicals to make them Super wash is extremely high. I have Shetland, Ryeland, Jacob. Blue Faced Leicester, Wensleydale and Teeswater yarns, tops and locks etc.

Our next virtual show will be Yarndale over the weekend of 26/27 September, where we will be behaving ourselves more than usual. We have produced a stunning photographic tour of the Yorkshire Dales which we hope will entice you to visit us, come on holiday to the Dales or even buy the products displayed. If you wish to visit, please do phone to check we are open.

Love Janet and Sara x

P.S We will be closed from the 11th to 18th September for stock taking, reorganising displays and a few days break. No orders will be processed during this time.
